"Moony, we need to talk about what happened with your father."

"No, Mother, I don't think we do."  Moondancer turned a page of his worn text book, ignoring Trixie entirely.

"Trixie just wants-Ah, I mean-I just want to make sure you're okay, dear. I know meeting your father meant a lot to you." Trixie placed a gentle hoof on her son's back. When he didn't respond, she hooked her hoof under his chin, turning his head to meet her gaze. "Moony. Talk to me, please?"

"There's nothing to say." Moondancer swatted her hoof away, and snapped his book shut. With a huff, he stood to leave.

"Moony, what happened wasn't your fault."

That stopped the stallion in his tracks. "...I know."

"Oh, that's good." Trixie let out a sigh of relief, smiling. "Because we can still-"

"It was never my fault." Moondancer interrupted sharply, turning to glare at her. "It was yours. I was simply too foolish to piece it together before. But I see now-it's your fault, Mother. It's always been your fault."

Trixie flinched at that, but quickly gulped a steadying breath. "I...I-I know you lash out when you're hurting, sweetie. But...but Trixie did warn you about going to Canterlot. Blueblood can be...insensitive. I knew he wouldn't accept you-but it's his loss, darling-"

“No, how could he have ever accepted me as a son, when you ran away and hid me away from him for nearly two decades?” Moondancer seethed. “I can almost, almost forgive his reasoning, but as for your cowardice-”

“Running away was a mistake. Trixie’s made many.” The magician’s head cast down in shame. “Forgive me, Moony. I was so afraid, and I was treated so miserably, I just thought-” Trixie grasped for the right words. “You put so much faith in Blueblood, but you don’t know him like I did, Moony. He had a way of seeing ponies as...as playthings, and when they stopped being amusing to him-”

“Spare me your sob story.” Moondancer rolled his eyes. “I’ll never believe the Great and Powerful Trixie was some sort of victim. No, I can see it now, all those years ago at that Grand Galloping Gala, you fanning your tail for Duke Blueblood, hungry for his wealth, his power, his prestige-”

“I loved him, Moony.” Trixie’s eyes welled up, and she desperately held back tears. “How c-can you say such things about me? I was in love. Or...or at least I thought I was-”

“You’re a fool.” Moondancer said coldly. He began to pace, and a dangerous light began to gleam in his eyes. “But I already figured as much. You think you can sit there and spin me some sad little broken fairy tale, but nothing you say will sway me from the truth! You are, and have always been, an awful mother.  The blood of Starswirl the Bearded may run through my veins, but I’m also polluted with your blood. You’re the reason my magic isn’t as powerful as it should be. You’re the reason nopony respects me like they should. ‘Great and Powerful’? What a lie.” Moondancer hissed. “You’re a disgrace, mother.”

Despite herself, Trixie began to cry. “Moony, p-please, don’t-”

“Don’t what?” Moondancer looked about, feigning innocence. “Tell the truth? No, I want you to hurt every bit as badly as I have all these years. You deserve it.”

“How can you say that?” Trixie cried. “All Trixie has ever done is try her best to raise you and love you and provide for you! W-when you wanted to study magic, I scraped up the money to buy you all your books, I reached out to Princess Twilight to tutor you! I thought we’d made a happy home here with Maud, I thought-”

“You thought wrong!” Moondancer snapped, magic crackling from his horn in sickening surges. “All you have done is deny me my birthright! I should have been wealthy, admired, respected! I should have been a prince! I should have been great and powerful! You ruined everything, you rotten, showboating, contemptible little fraud!”

There was a pause, and Moondancer shuddered for breath. Trixie’s jaw worked uselessly, struggling to process his words. Finally, when she did speak, her voice was tiny and broken, as though someone had trodden on it.

“Moony…”

“I hate you.” Moondancer said quietly. He didn’t look at her. “...I’m leaving.”

Trixie made to stop him, but he lit his horn in warning, a silent threat. “Moondancer, no, don’t-where will you even go, honey?”

“Anywhere is better.” He seized possessions in his magic-books, quills, parchment- and threw them madly into a saddlebag. “Anywhere is better than here.”

“But w-what will I tell Maudie?” Trixie’s voice was breaking, her face was crumpling, and she was rapidly losing the fight against her grief.

“Tell her you screwed up. She’s used to hearing that.” In a whirl of magic, Moondancer draped his old worn traveling cloak around his shoulders, and tossed his full saddlebag over his back. As he made his way to the door, he was surprised that his mother made no attempt to stop him, and he found himself pausing.

“I love you, Moony.” His ear caught Trixie’s desperate sob. “...Please don’t go.”

With his hoof on the door handle, Moondancer was tempted, for only a moment, to look back. Then he steeled himself, and pushed the door open.

“Goodbye, mother.”

haha wow so i introduced moondancer exactly one year ago today what a coinkidink: New Tricks by Lopoddityhappier times for these two back then i guess

anyway, this would be the end of moondancer just being kind of a butt and the start of him graduating to sadistic asshat

oh, to recap: Moondancer is the son of Trixie and Duke Blueblood. Trixie ran away during her pregnancy and was homeless for a bit before meeting Maud Pie, who took her in. The two eventually developed feelings for each other, and raised Moondancer together as a loving couple

moony does have a fuckton of issues tho, but he did start out as a sweet kid at least
