Description

Morning Glory Midnight Abyss
"Come talk to me when you're dead."
Parents:
Sunset Shimmer, Starlight Glimmer
Species: Unicorn/Female
Build: Petite
Special talent: Witchcraft, necromancy
Occupation: Potion Brewer, Witch
Nickname(s): Morning, Glory (by her mothers), Miss Gloom n' Doom (by Pandora)
Born/Residing in the Ponyville

Personality/Background:
Some time ago, following the graduation of her human peers, Sunset Shimmer returned to Equestria, where she began work as a magical research assistant under Princess Twilight Sparkle. It was here that Sunset met and befriended Twilight's student, Starlight Glimmer, and the two quickly bonded over tea, book discussions, and being former maniacal super villains looking to find a new way in life. Their friendship progressed into romance, and the two eventually married, and (with a little magic) bore a tiny, adorable pudgy pink filly. They named her Morning Glory, as they hoped she would be the dawn of a new, brighter era in their lives, their perfect, innocent little ball of sunshine.

Nope.

As a teenager, their daughter ditched her cutesy birth name and rechristened herself "Midnight Abyss", to reflect the black void in her soul. Like her mothers, Midnight is highly intelligent and skilled in many areas of magic. She is also dour, cynical, blunt, sarcastic, irreverent, and even cold. Although she does have a (very dark) sense of humor, she's never been known to smile. Midnight dislikes socializing (with living ponies) and projects a constant air of self-assured superiority, possibly to mask the fact that she's secretly quite lonely. Fortunately, she's been blessed with a unique special talent....reanimating corpses.

Relationships:
Midnight's parents love her very much, but they don't always understand their daughter's gloomy ways or tendencies to bring shambling zombies home as dinner guests. Thus their relationship is strained, and Midnight sometimes feels misunderstood and undermined, especially when they accidentally refer to her by her old name. Midnight can get downright surly when her mothers try to set rules for her necromancy, "Mom, you literally lead a cult and used time travel magic to engineer the apocalypse. And Mother-you transformed into a demon creature and tried to take over Equestria with a teenage army. You two are honestly going to tell me that reanimating a dead gerbil is 'unethical'?"

Starlight and Sunset try to bond with their daughter over less ethically dubious activities, like embroidery and family outings. Midnight does detest these "mummy bonding" attempts, but deep down, she supposes she appreciates her mothers reaching out. There are days when she can get over herself and perhaps tolerate a hug from one of them.

Midnight (big shock) doesn't have many friends. She claims to prefer the company of the dead, and performs seances to communicate with the departed, casually speaks to ghosts, and reanimates corpses to do her bidding. The first corpse she ever successfully resurrected was a fellow(?) she named Bertram. Bertram by LopoddityHis former identity is unknown. Bertram is her loyal assistant and very best friend, though she'd be hard-pressed to admit it. His intelligence is about that of a dog's, and while he can't speak in more than groans and gurgles, he is fairly expressive, even snarky, and cares deeply for his mistress. He enjoys ear scritchies, warm blankies, and chew toys (especially ones shaped like ponies). Midnight enjoys his company and dutifully repairs him whenever he gets damaged. Bertram sometimes gets jealous of new zombies Midnight summons, and growls and hisses so they won't get too familiar with his blankie or his mistress.

Midnight has a loose rivalry with Pandora over who is better at witchcraft, and Pan considers her a dear frenemy, sometimes popping over to borrow a cup of salamander tongues for a potion, or just checking up on the solitary little witch. Midnight admires Pan's minion, Cupcake, and has asked Pan if she can have Cupcake as a minion once the mare dies, to which Pan cursed Midnight to sing like a perky princess for twelve straight hours.

Midnight has great dislike for Moondancer, the son of Trixie Lulamoon. Because of Starlight and Trixie's friendship, their children were often pushed to play together growing up. Midnight considers him to be an insufferable, power-obsessed egomaniac, and owns a hoof-made voodoo doll of him to torment whenever he says something rude to her.

Special:
-Midnight possesses the ability to see ghosts. She was born with the ability, and her mothers were often alarmed to find their filly calmly talking to somepony that wasn't there. Midnight will conduct rituals to put ponies in contact with the dead, for the right price.

-Midnight makes voodoo plush dolls of ponies she doesn't like, and owns several. The effectiveness of their use is debatable. Pandora was quite flattered the day she learned Midnight had made one of her. ("Aww look how cute mini-Panny is! And what detailed stitching!...Hey, why is there a needle stuck in the butt?")

-She is asexual and largely disinterested in romance.

-Midnight earns a living by selling bottled potions. They sometimes contain a useful spell or a cure for an ailment, but more often than not, ponies come to her to buy bottled hexes and curses, which Midnight is especially talented at brewing.

-Midnight doesn't like zombie movies.

-Midnight is the most powerful unicorn in the Nextgen cast, just faintly edging out Moondancer.

So......... does Bertram remind anyone else of Granny Smith but very dead and very decayed?
